Final Stats

Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball team cruised to an 86-80 victory over Saint Augustine’s University in the second round of the 2017 CIAA Tournament on Wednesday, February 22nd at the Bojangles Coliseum.

The Broncos will advance to play the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division, Shaw University on Thursday, February 23rd at 3:00 p.m. in the Spectrum Center. FSU improve to 11-15 with the win; while Saint Augustine’s concludes their season at 13-16

The two teams battled back and forth for the first seven minutes of the first half as the lead changed hands five times. Holding a slim one point lead at the 12-minute mark, FSU began to pull away using a 17-4 flourish over the next seven minutes to push their lead to double digits at 28-14.

The Falcons closed the gap to 30-20 before senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) scored eight of his team-high 11 first half points over the final 3:26 to give the Broncos their biggest lead (39-23). Saint Augustine’s got a put back dunk from Quincy January at the buzzer, but the Broncos went into the locker room at the break up 39-25.

Fayetteville State shot 56% (14-25) from the field in the first half. SAU shot 25.8% (8-31) from the floor and made 9-10 (90%) from the free throw line.

The Broncos opened the second half with a quick 5-1 run, increasing their lead to 18 points at 44-26. Saint Augustine’s continued to chip away at the lead with a 19-9 run to cut the deficit to single digits (53-45) with 9:34 remaining. Tyson and junior guard Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) combined for all nine points in a 9-2 run. The Broncos pushed the lead back up to 15 points with 6:06 left.

The Fayetteville State lead oscillated between 10 and 15 points until the final minute of play when SAU made one final push. The Falcons scored 19 points in the final 1:11, closing the gap to four with 26 seconds before Fayetteville State settled in for the 86-80 win.



Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinson, NC) finished with a team-high 25 points, along with five assists. Tyson produced a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. CIAA All-Rookie selection Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) added 11 points, six boards, and three steals.

CIAA Defensive Player of the Year Quincy January recorded a double-double of 26 points and 15 rebounds, along with seven blocks. Kasey Bryant pitched in 24 points, while Jquwan Ruffin notched 18 points. All-CIAA selection Anthony Gaskins went scoreless, shooting 0-13 from the field.

Fayetteville State made 34 of 48 (70%) free throws and held a slim 36-34 rebounding edge on the glass.
