Final Stats

Raleigh, NC – The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball fell short of victory in a 51-49 divisional loss to Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday, February 18th at Emery Gymnasium. FSU moves to 10-15 overall, 6-10 in the CIAA, and 4-6 in the division; while the Falcons improve to 12-15 overall, 6-10 in the conference, and 3-7 in the Southern. The Broncos will enter the 2017 CIAA Tournament as the Southern No. 4 seed and will play on Wednesday, February 22nd.

FSU faced an uphill battle for the majority of the first half. Saint Augustine’s led by as much as 19 before ending the half with a 36-25 lead. Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) had eight points and two assists in the opening. Fayetteville State shot 37.5% (9-24) from the field, compared to 53.8% (14-26) shooting from the Falcons.

The Broncos outscored SAU 24-15 in the second half. Senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) cut the deficit to 49-47 with a layup at the 3:23 mark. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) tied the game 49-49 with two free throws and 1:21 remaining.

Fayetteville State gained possession with a defensive rebound following a missed field goal by Anthony Gaskins. Dawson was off target on a three-pointer and Tyson turned the ball over after grabbing the offensive board. The Falcons took a timeout with just 20 seconds left to play.

Kasey Bryant converted a go-ahead layup with only six seconds on the clock. The Broncos missed on a buzzer beater three and SAU held onto the win.

Bryant had a double-double with a game-high 17 points, along with 10 rebounds. Dawson added 12 points and three assists. Tyson concluded the contest with eight points and eight boards.



Kenneth Collins and Quincy January both had 15 points apiece. January also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Fayetteville State will play the winner of Lincoln (PA) and Saint Augustine’s on Wednesday, February 22nd at 6:40 p.m. The contest will be played at the Bojangles Arena in Charlotte, NC.
