Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball team dropped in the standings after a 73-63 divisional loss to Shaw University on Wednesday, February 15th at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Broncos fall 10-14 overall, 6-9 in the conference, 4-5 in the Southern; the Bears improve to 13-12 overall, 9-6 in the CIAA, and 7-2 in the division.

FSU shot 42.6 (23-54) from the field, 37% (10-27) from beyond the arc, and 46.7% (7-15) from the free throw line. It was a very close contest in the first half with nine lead changes and three ties. The Broncos took the lead several times in the half. In the final seconds of the half, the score was tied 32-32 until redshirt junior guard Jyonte’ Raynor (Goldsboro, NC) regained the lead with a buzzer beating three pointer to end the half at 35-32.

The Broncos held a 10-4 advantage off points in the paint in the opening frame. Sophomore guard Xavier Robinson (Fayetteville, NC) had nine points before the break, shooting 60% (3-5) from long range.

In the second half, Fayetteville State kept pace offensively. Redshirt junior guard Carl McCray (Roper, NC) scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, including 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line. The Broncos fought hard to maintain the lead and the game reached a seventh tie at the 8:13 mark. Benji Bell converted a field goal-free throw three point play to move Shaw ahead 59-56 with 5:52 left to play.

The Bears outscored FSU 14-7 in the final five minutes of the contest. Shaw held an 11-6 advantage in points off turnovers in the second half.

Senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) had a total of 12 points and five of the 33 team rebounds. Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) closed out his final performance in Capel Arena with nine points and eight assists.

 

 

Shaw standouts included guard Benji Bell, who led 23 total points, and Larry Richardson who had a total of 20 points. The team shot 81.8% (27-33) from the free throw line. The Bears caught up with the Broncos by seizing the turnovers and scoring. Foul trouble for the Broncos at the end of the game led to the outcome.

Fayetteville State closes out the regular season on Saturday, February 18th against Saint Augustine’s University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC.
