BRONCOS MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WINSTON-SALEM STATE 76-65 IN ROAD DIVISIONAL DUEL

Winston-Salem, NC – The Fayetteville State University men’s basketball team suffered a 76-65 loss to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, February 11th at the C.E. Gaines Center. FSU moves to 10-13 overall, 6-8 in the CIAA, and 4-4 in the division; while WSSU improves to 11-13 overall, 6-8 in the conference, and 4-4 in the Southern.

FSU jumped out with a 5-0 lead following a three pointer from senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC). Five minutes into the game, the Broncos held a 12-2 advantage with back to back layups from senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC). The Rams rebounded with a 13-2 scoring run over the next five minutes to capture a 15-14 advantage.

Redshirt junior guard Carl McCray (Roper, NC) nailed a three pointer with 9:02 on the clock to put the Broncos up 17-15. The contest remained a tug of war down the stretch. Dawson hit a jumper with 1:48 remaining in the half for a 33-32 FSU lead. Julius Barnes made a three pointer to recapture an advantage for WSSU.

Fayetteville State trailed 36-33 heading into the locker room at halftime. There were seven lead changes in the opening half. Dawson had nine points and three rebounds, followed by McCray with six points off 66% (2-3) from the three point line. Barnes had 12 points for the Rams in the first half.

The Broncos cut the lead down to one on multiple occasions early in the second half. However, Winston-Salem State would not relinquish their advantage in the final period. WSSU outscored Fayetteville State 20-12 in the paint and 29-7 in bench points in the second frame.

Dawson concluded the contest with a game-high 20 points, along with seven rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) chipped in 11 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Xavier Robinson (Fayetteville, NC) added 10 points, including 50% (3-6) shooting from beyond the arc.

 

 

Robert Colon and Ameer Jackson scored 17 points apiece for the Rams. Barnes had 12 points and William Crandell produced 11 points and eight boards.

FSU will return to action for their last home game of the regular season and Senior Recognition Night against Shaw University on Wednesday, February 15th. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena.
