CHARLOTTE - Thirty-two minutes into its 84-70 loss at Johnson C. Smith on Tuesday, the Fayetteville State men's basketball team felt good. FSU (5-12, 2-9 CIAA) led by as much nine and was on top 64-58 with 8:31 left in the second half. That's when things went downhill for the Broncos. JCSU (13-6, 7-5 CIAA), led by Ronald Thornhill and Brian Mobley who combined for 48 points, took over. A missed dunk spurred the Golden Bulls on and they closed the game on a 26-10 run. JCSU shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half. After trailing 23-17 midway through the first half, Jamel Carpenter and FSU went on a 24-12 run and led 41-35 at halftime. Carpenter, the CIAA's top scorer, led FSU with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Jarmel Baxter had 12 points while Ariel Robinson contributed 11. Point guard Jarrick Jones and junior Ben Davis had six points each. Carpenter has scored 20 or more points 12 times this season. It was the Golden Bulls' sixth straight win over FSU. The Broncos last victory over JCSU was a 61-54 win on Jan. 13, 2007 at Brayboy Gymnasium. First-year head coach Alphonza Kee's team shot 37.3 percent from the field and made 5-of-19 3-point field goal attempts (26.3 percent).
