RALEIGH, NC - Fayetteville State (8-11, 3-7 CIAA, 0-4 Div.) fell to the Shaw Bears 78-64 on Wednesday evening at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in CIAA Southern Division action. Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) led the Broncos with 11 points. The Broncos led 32-28 at halftime; but struggled from the free-throw line converting on 5-of-14 (35.7%) attempts while Shaw (13-7, 7-3, 1-3) finished 24-of-33 (72.7%).
Best was one of two FSU players to score in double-figures. Tyrrel Tate (Jr., Raleigh, NC) added 10 points.
Fayetteville State shot 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the first half. Shaw scored the first five points of the game before the Broncos responded with a 9-2 run to lead by two (9-7) at the 14:37 mark. The Broncos held the largest lead of the opening half at eleven (30-19) with 5:23 left but Shaw ended on a 9-2 run to trail by four at halftime.
The Bears started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 35-32 lead. The lead would be one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Shaw led by double-digits for a majority of the second half including a 14-point advantage (70-56) with 1:23 left in the game. Fayetteville State cut its deficit to nine on several occasions late; but could not get any closer as the Bears made several free throws at the end to seal the game.
The Broncos shot 44.8 percent from the field while Shaw went 25-of-47 (53.2%). The Bears led in points in the paint (36-22) and points off turnovers (18-11).
Andre Paulk scored a game-high 19 points for Shaw and was one of three players to post double-figure points. Curtis Hines added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Latrail McCoy contributed 15 points.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 4 pm when it hosts the Saint Augustine's Falcons at Felton J. Capel Arena. The contest will be televised by Urban Sports and Entertainment. Check your local listings for channel availability.
