FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Winston-Salem State (15-3 Overall, 8-1 CIAA, 2-1 Div.) beat the winter storm on its way to Fayetteville yesterday and beat Fayetteville State 86-65 tonight in Felton J. Capel Arena. Justin Glover scored a game-high 21 points for the Rams, who led at halftime 43-25. Anthony Shelton (Cary, NC) and Tyrrel Tate (Raleigh, NC) also scored in double-figures with 17 and 16 points respectfully.
The Rams knocked down a three-pointer in the opening seconds which quickly led to an 8-0 run in the first three minutes. WSSU continued to control the advantage; increasing the lead to 20 (43-23) with 38 seconds left prior to intermission. The Rams continued in the second half creating a lead of 27 (77-50) with 3:27 left in the game.
Anthony Shelton led the way for Fayetteville State (8-10, 3-6, 0-3) in the first half with 13 points. He finished the game 6-of-13 from the field, with one three-pointer made, and 4-of-4 in free throws. Tyrrel Tate was 5-of-12 in shooting and 5-of-6 from the line. He also made one three-pointer.
Fayetteville State struggled throughout the game. The Broncos were 34.8% (8-of-23) accurate in shooting in the first half and 50% (13-of-26) in the second. Although FSU was 8-of-10 in free throws prior to intermission, it dropped to 57.9% (11-of-19).
Winston-Salem State forced 21 turnovers which led to 29 points. Nineteen of the points were in the first half. FSU had a total of 29 turnovers.
Although the Rams made 46.9% of its field goals, 38.5% (10-of-26) of them were three-pointers.
Fayetteville State will take on the Shaw Bears on Wednesday night in Raleigh, NC. The Rams will travel to Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte.
