The Fayetteville State Broncos went up to Raleigh, NC to take on Shaw University in the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium hoping to continue their winning streak. Not only did they get the victory, 68-56, and extend their winning streak to five straight, but they are in the number one spot in the CIAA Western Division.
The Broncos' ability to shoot from behind the 3-point line in the first half, allowed them to go into halftime with a five point lead (32-27). In the first half, both teams made at least 40 percent of their field goals and there were no glaring contrasts in the other statistical categories. The Broncos' bench did provide more of a spark than their opponents'. FSU's bench outscored Shaw's 11 to 4 in the first half. Junior Billy McDade came off the bench and scored eight of those 11, including two 3-pointers and a thunderous dunk that silenced a few of Shaw's fans.
In the second half, Fayetteville State's Andy Gebru led the way. Gebru finished with a game-high 17 points and team-high 5 rebounds. Senior Zeke Mayes provided a solid inside presence, and finished the game as the only other Bronco with a double digit point total, 15. Fayetteville State's largest lead was 13, which they reached at the 14:19 mark in the second half. They controlled the tempo, and responded to any attempt at a run by the Shaw Bears.
The win improves the Broncos to 11-7 overall and 7-4 in the CIAA. Shaw falls to 2-16 overall and remains winless in the CIAA at 0-11. Next the Broncos travel to St. Paul's College to take on the Tigers. The game will be Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 4 pm.
