FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Fayetteville State rounded up the Broncos to avenge a cross divisional 75-72 loss to Virginia Union on Saturday night. In tonight’s matchup against Bowie State and its final cross divisional opponent, the Bulldogs strapped in for a bucking ride and survived 82-79 in the closing minutes of the game.
Bowie State (7-8 overall; 3-3 CIAA) overcame a six-point deficit with 1:55 remaining in the game to tie it at 79 with 37 ticks left. The 11th tie of game came from a free-throw made after a flagrant foul. Through the commotion, a technical foul was assessed to the Bronco bench; which gave BSU and extra pair of free-throws and pursuing the possession. Najee White, who led the Bulldogs with 18 points, connected on his second technical free-throw to one-up BSU at 80-79. Bryan Wilson took the possession and extended the lead to three with a layup with 11 seconds left.
Fayetteville State (8-7, 3-3) faltered in its attempts to tie the game. Junior forward Tyrrel Tate (Raleigh, NC) led the game with a career high 35 points. Sheldonte Fields (New Bern, NC) manned 12 rebounds while Louis Craft (Fayetteville, NC) pulled in ten.
The Broncos led by one at halftime (41-40) after Bowie State controlled the majority of it with a slim lead. Tyrrel Tate had a total of 19 points at the break.
After intermission, Fayetteville State managed a lead of 11 (65-54) at the 11:06 mark but watched it dwindle away as the game progressed. FSU made one less field goal than Bowie State with 27 made. The team was 40.9% (27-of-66) compared to 41.8% (28-of-67) by BSU. Although the Broncos were 61.8% (21-of-34) from the free-throw line, FSU was 2-for-5 in the final five minutes of the game.
Bowie State was 5-of-8 in free-throws in the final two minutes and finished 21-of-33 for 63.6%.
BSU’s White had a double-double with ten rebounds to go along with his 18. Three other Bulldogs scored in double figures with Carlos Smith netting 17 and Byron Westmorland and Ray Gatling tipping in 15 each.
Fayetteville State will prepare to open Southern Division play on Saturday, when the Broncos travel to Johnson C. Smith with a 7:30 pm matchup.
Bowie State will host Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday for a Northern Division contest.
