Fayetteville State Drops Divisional Opener 67-57 to J.C. Smith

Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State let one get away from them mid-way through the second half as Johnson C. Smith escaped Felton J. Capel Arena with a 67-57 victory.

Denzell Hosch (Shelby, NC) led the effort with 21 points while Joshua Bryant was the only other Bronco to score in double digits with 12. Jeremiah Pope (Clinton, NC) came off the bench to score eight points. William Tibbs (Winston-Salem, NC) made his return to the court after a seven-game hiatus, due to injury, and scored a quick seven points.

Fayetteville State (4-12 overall, 1-5 CIAA, and 0-1 in the division) shot 51.4% in field goals compared to the Golden Bulls 47.7%. FSU made 11-of-16 three-pointers (68.8%) while Johnson C. Smith shot 8 of 12. JCSU held the advantage at the free-throw line with 17 of 23 attempts. FSU had fewer visits with 8-of-16 free throws. The Golden Bulls also took advantage of 15 second-chance points, to FSU’s zero.

JCSU’s Robert Davis led the game with 24 points. Cayse Minor scored 16 points and Christian Kirchman added 13.

Fayetteville State will travel to Elizabeth City State for a non-conference match-up this Thursday, January 17th. The Broncos will return home next Saturday for a CIAA televised game against the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. The game will tip at 4:00 pm and will broadcast on the ASPiRE network across the country.
