ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Fayetteville State (7-5 overall, 2-1 CIAA) earned a hard-fought 66-63 victory over Elizabeth City State (8-5, 1-2 CIAA) on Monday night behind Tyrrel Tate’s second double-double of the season. The junior from Raleigh, NC scored a career-high 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Broncos seized control of the game with 2:45 remaining with Tate scoring five of the final nine points scored. The Vikings led by two (26-24) at halftime.
Tate was 10-of-18 from the field with 2-of-3 in three-pointers and 8-of-11 at the free-throw line. Andre Best (Sr., Raleigh, NC) contributed 12 points in the come-back effort.
Both teams clashed at jump ball with ECSU taking an early five-point lead (9-4) with 14:04 on the clock. FSU cut into the lead for three one-point advantages until the Vikings boasted its largest lead (6) before halftime with 3:06 left.
The Broncos continued to scrap in the second half with a shooting percentage of 58.3. FSU increased its intensity on offense creating 31 attempts at the free throw line. Fayetteville State converted 20 of the opportunities for 64.5% compared the Vikings 44.4% (8-of-18) at the charity stripe.
Tyrrel Tate pumped in 22 of his 30 points in the half and accounted for 20 of the 42 points scored by the Broncos.
ECSU’s Angelo Sharpless also finished with a double-double of 18 points and a dozen rebounds. Deon Rice added 12 points and Miykael Faulcon finished with 11.
The Broncos return home for the first of three straight games in Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU faces Lincoln (PA) on Thursday, Virginia Union on Saturday and Bowie State on next Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
