PETERSBURG, VA - The Fayetteville State (6-5, 1-1 CIAA) men's basketball team suffered a 72-54 setback to Virginia State on Saturday evening at the Daniel Gymnasium. The Broncos shot its lowest field goal percentage of the season (in a loss) with its 16-of-48 (33.3%) performance. Anthony Shelton (So., Cary, NC) led his teammates with 15 points. Virginia State (6-5, 1-1 CIAA) went into the locker room leading 35-27 at halftime.
Shelton was one of two Broncos to score in double-figures. Juwan Addison (Fr., Fairmont, NC) came off the bench to score ten.
Mike Bynum led the Trojans with 24 points while Kenny Mitchell contributed 18.
Fayetteville State was outscored in points in the paint (33-16), points off turnovers (22-11) and fast-break points (13-2).
The opening half went back-and-forth with six lead changes until the final tie at 2:41 before intermission. Virginia State extended its lead to 17 points at 44-27 (16:47 mark) and reached its largest lead of 26 (72-46) with 3:27 left.
The FSU Broncos wrap up their six-game road trip on Monday, January 7th against Elizabeth City State at 7:30 p.m. in the RL Vaughan Center.
