Sept. 20, 2017

Charlotte, NC – Fayetteville State University head women’s cross-country coach Inez Turner and freshman sensation Aleena Cruz have garnered CIAA Weekly accolades after Friday’s performance.

This past Friday (September 15th), the FSU women’s program won the Adidas XC Challenge non-division 1 race with 44 points. The meet was hosted by NC State at the Wake Med Soccer & Cross-Country Complex in Cary, NC. Two club teams competed in the race but not allowed to score team points.

Aleena Cruz (Columbia, SC – Kinghtdale HS) led the way for the Broncos, finishing 12th overall and scoring three (3) points. Cruz completed the 5-kilometer course in 20:25.20. This performance has led to her being named this week’s CIAA Women’s Cross-Country Runner of the Week. She has been the fastest runner for FSU with a previous time of 19:38.09 at the Virginia State Fall Opener (Sept. 8th).

Head Coach Inez Turner joined the staff at Fayetteville State University in July and has already begun to develop the women’s cross-country team into a CIAA contender. The Adidas victory has garnered coach the Women’s Coach of the Week award.

Fayetteville State will run locally this weekend in Methodist’s Monarch Challenge.
