June 18, 2013
FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the Sandhills Walk for Multiple Sclerosis event held on April 21 in Fayetteville. The four-mile walk/run was sponsored by the National MS Society.
The community service project gave the Fayetteville State student-athletes an opportunity to give back to the community. The walk/run was held at Honeycutt Park and covered a total of 4.75 miles.
“As coaches we want to teach athletes life skills through participation in sports,” stated Head Coach Derwin Sheppard. “The Sandhills Walk for MS gave our student-athletes the opportunity to participate in something that is more important and bigger than themselves. The student-athletes were eager to be involved and showed excitement and enthusiasm throughout. I am very proud of all of them.”
A total of six FSU student-athletes, including two women’s basketball players, took part in the one-day event. Those student-athletes were: Brandon Elmore, Douglas Jackson, Renee Guischard, Brittany Wilkins, Bria Wilkins and Makeea Suggs.
