CARY, N.C. - The Fayetteville State Broncos' ascension up the CIAA cross country ladder continues. Fayetteville State's men's cross country team, which finished eighth a year ago in the CIAA Cross Country Championships, placed seventh overall at the 2011 title meet on Thursday, just three points out of sixth.
Ernest Hawkins, who finished the 8-kilometer course at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary in 27 minutes, 58.0 seconds, placed 15th overall to lead all Broncos' runners.
After Hawkins, Douglas Jackson was the second Broncos' runner to cross the finish line, placing 18th overall with a time of 28:26.1. Greg Eatmon (29:29.8) was 29th overall while Ervin Brinkley (31:11.1 was 47th and Joshua Morales (33:18.8) was 57th.
Shaw won the meet with 44 points, edging Winston-Salem State, which had 47 points. The Rams' Andrew Chebli won the league title by finishing the race in 24:32.0, more than a minute ahead of second-place Brandon Jones of Shaw.
Fayetteville State's women's cross country team placed 11th overall in the meet, which was won by Winston-Salem State with 31 points, just two points ahead of Virginia State.
The Lady Broncos' runners were: Keisha Edwards (45th, 23:26.5), Samantha Meeks (51st, 25:02.2), Jasmin White (60th, 28:10.0), Rebecca Polasheck (62nd, 28:34.6) and Mekeia Young (70th, 32:58.1).
Winston-Salem State's Brittney Killebrew won the 5-kilometer race in 19:11.2.
