FSU Women Finish 2nd in Virginia State Fall XC Opener, Men 7th

Petersburg, VA - Newly named Cross Country and Track Coach Inez Turner is continuing to make waves within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. This past Friday, Coach Turner ran into her former squad of Winston-Salem State University at the Virginia State Fall Cross Country Opener.

In the Broncos season-opener, the women of FSU finished second overall with four runners crossing the line in the top ten (10) positions.

WSSU won the meet just one point ahead of the Broncos, 46-47. Host Virginia State finished third (85 points), while Virginia Union (104), Elizabeth City State (122), Shaw (135), and Chowan (137) closed out the race. Fifty-five women ran in the race.

Freshman Aleena Cruz finished second (2nd) overall with a time of 19:38.09. She was three (3) seconds behind winner Ojai Brooks (WSSU) who clocked a time of 19:35.52. Cruz ran an average mile of 6:19.07 on the 5-kilometer course. Another Bronco freshman, Destiny Stevons was just steps behind her teammate. She was almost seconds away from breaking the 20-minute mark with a time of 20:34.06. Her average mile was 6:37.08.

Morgan Gaither and Carisha Leonard teamed up to cross in the top ten (10) in the sixth (6th) and seventh (7th) spots, respectfully. Gaither ran a time of 20:43.13 while Leonard stopped at 21:18.06.

The men's team finished seventh (7th) out of eight (8) teams participating. Of the 93 runners, FSU finished with 173 points. The top runner for the Broncos was Jaylaan Poe who finished 21st but crossed the line as the 36th runner. Poe ran the 8-kilometer race in 31:23.8 with an average mile of 6:18.9. Khalil Williams finished 42nd and scored 22 points with a time of 32:27.2.

In the race, the Broncos got the better of WSSU by 20 points, 173 to 193. Virginia State won the meet with 30 points while Chowan finished second with 65 and Virginia Union third with 98. Elizabeth City State (105), Shaw (121) and Saint Augustine's (142) was fourth, fifth, and sixth.

Fayetteville State will compete in the NC State Adidas Cross Country Invite on Friday, September 15 at the Wake Med Soccer Complex in Cary, NC.
