Meet Our Staff

Christopher John Barnes, M.D., Director of Sports Medicine & Team Physician


Dr. Chris Barnes joined Fayetteville Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine after completing a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Reconstruction fellowship at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute in Van Nuys, California. During his fellowship, Dr. Barnes did extensive training underneath Dr. Stephen Snyder, founder of the International Shoulder Arthroscopy Society. While in Van Nuys, Dr. Barnes was the Assistant Team Physician for the College of the Canyons and Oaks Christian High School.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Barnes graduated Magna Cum Laude with an undergraduate degree Biology from The University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society and was chosen as the James B. Angell Scholar in 1991. He was also a member of the Academic All Big Ten Track & Field Team, as well as the Phi Gamma Delta Service Fraternity.

Dr. Barnes attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine. While in Columbus, he was a member of the Landacre Research Society and received the Samuel J. Roessler Research Award.

After medical school, Dr. Barnes attended Duke University Medical Center for his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency. While at Duke, Dr. Barnes was the Resident Team Physician for Duke University and North Carolina Central University. He was also a course instructor for Lower Limb and Orthopaedic Anatomy.

Dr. Barnes is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society. He has numerous studies and publications to his name.

Dr. Barnes is the current orthopaedic consultant for the Fayetteville Swampdogs Semi Pro Baseball Team and the Fayetteville FireAntz Semi Pro Hockey Team. He is the team physician for Fayetteville State University and Methodist University. Dr. Barnes also covers numerous area high school athletic teams and works closely with the coaches and trainers. During the fall football season, he holds a Saturday morning sports injury clinic to expedite the care of the local injured athletes.

John Townsend, Head Athletic Trainer


John Townsend has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Fayetteville State University since September 2005. He joined the Bronco family upon completion of a Master of Science degree from Montana State University - Billings. Prior to that, he spent four years at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL before graduating in 2003 with University Honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training.

Mr. Townsend has worked with several sports medicine teams including coverage of several Walt Disney World marathons, the National Youth Sports Program, the Rotary Gridiron Classic College Football All-Star game, Universal Cheerleading Association, and Universal Dance Association among many different high school and college teams. Mr. Townsend has also been a mentor for local high school students and works diligently to promote the field of athletic training.

Amanda Porter, Asst. Athletic Trainer


Amanda Porter joined Fayetteville State's Sports Medicine team in August 2006. Prior to FSU Ms. Porter served as the head athletic trainer for Paw Paw High School (Paw Paw, MI) while attending Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI) where she completed her Master of Arts Degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training with an emphasis in Exercise Science. Ms. Porter received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (Oshkosh, WI).

Ms. Porter has experience working with collegiate, high school, and professional baseball athletes. While attending Western Michigan University, she also worked with the United States Tennis Association Nationals Boys 16 and 18 year olds.

Ms. Porter is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) through the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer and is licensed by North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners.
